Amos 1

The words of Amos, who was among the a shepherds
Or sheep breeders
of c Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel d in the days of e Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of f Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years
Or during two years
before h the earthquake.

Judgment on Israel’s Neighbors

And he said:

i “The  Lord roars from Zion
and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
j the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the k top of l Carmel withers.”

Thus says the  Lord:

m “For three transgressions of n Damascus,
and for four o I will not revoke the punishment
Hebrew  I will not turn it back; also verses 6, 9, 11, 13

because they have threshed q Gilead
with threshing sledges of iron.
r So I will send a fire upon the house of s Hazael,
and it shall devour the strongholds of t Ben-hadad.
I will u break the gate-bar of v Damascus,
and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of w Aven
Or On

and him who holds the scepter from y Beth-eden;
and the people of z Syria shall go into exile to aa Kir,”

says the  Lord.

Thus says the  Lord:

ab “For three transgressions of ac Gaza,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because ad they carried into exile a whole people
to deliver them up to Edom.
So I will send a fire upon the wall of ae Gaza,
and it shall devour her strongholds.
I will cut off the inhabitants from af Ashdod,
and him who holds the scepter from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish,”

says the Lord  God.

Thus says the  Lord:

ag “For three transgressions of ah Tyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10 So I will send a fire upon the wall of ai Tyre,
and it shall devour her strongholds.”

11 Thus says the  Lord:

aj “For three transgressions of ak Edom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
al because he pursued his brother with the sword
am and cast off all pity,
an and his anger tore perpetually,
ao and he kept his wrath forever.
12 So I will send a fire upon ap Teman,
and it shall devour the strongholds of aq Bozrah.”

13 Thus says the  Lord:

ar “For three transgressions of the as Ammonites,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because at they have ripped open pregnant women in au Gilead,
that they might enlarge their border.
14 So I will kindle a fire in the wall of av Rabbah,
aw and it shall devour her strongholds,
with shouting on the day of battle,
ax with a tempest in the day of the whirlwind;
15 and ay their king shall go into exile,
he and his princes
Or officials
together,”

says the  Lord.
